Tips and Tricks on How to Become Kitchen-Smart

June 5, 2017

It is a nice summer morning and you just woke up. You feel like making a nice big “eggy” breakfast for your family, but you’re not sure if the eggs are still fresh enough to use. What do you do? Well, a hack to check the freshness of an egg usually involves placing it in a cup of water. If the egg sinks, that means that it is good enough to be used. If the egg floats, then that means that the egg is no longer fresh and it is preferable not to eat it.

Another egg hack is placing it in cold water after it has been hard-boiled. Placing the hot egg in a small bowl of cold water and slightly cracking and tapping it against the bottom surface of the bowl (while it is in it), will make it easier to peel its outer layer. Say goodbye to the days when you used to burn your fingers trying to peel an egg shell and hello to a nice set of non-burnt fingers!

If you happen to want to make a nice omelet with those eggs, then you can add a nice handful of chopped onions.  Do not fear adding those onions to add some flavor to your eggs just because of the tears that come along with them. Onions can be a bit tricky when it comes to their dicing, especially since they can make even the strongest of men tear up a little, but there is a solution for that. To prevent that from happening, you can place the onion in a bowl of water for a couple of minutes before dicing it. Make sure that the outer layer of the onion is peeled before you place it in the water and voila! No more tears.

If you are up to it and don’t feel ridiculous doing it, there is also always the option of wearing goggles as you dice those onions. This is the fastest and easiest of methods to stop those tears from coming, but not necessarily one that is embarrassment-proof.

We cannot; however, talk about hacks in the kitchen without mentioning the most recent one and that is: preparing food in the microwave. You read that right. People aren’t just heating up their food in the microwave anymore, but now they are also preparing it inside of this kitchen appliance. Whether it’s for nutritious meals or delicious desserts, people are using the microwave to make fast one size portions of the food they love. You can make your own pizza, mac and cheese, brownies, and muffins by minimizing the ingredients to serve one person and placing them in a mug in the microwave. This hack can help you from eating those leftovers for days on end!

The final hack is for the coffee lovers out there. With the arrival of summer, you might want to enjoy a nice cup of iced coffee, but don’t know how to make it. All you have to do is prepare a nice pot of coffee, or even use some leftover coffee from an earlier batch, and pour it into the ice-cube tray. Place the tray in the freezer and wait until the cubes are solid. Now you can use the frozen cubes of coffee by placing them in your mug and adding some newly made hot coffee to them. This hack can be quite effective, especially since adding normal ice cubes to your coffee might dilute it and change its taste.
